Rigid-Flex Boards

What is difference between rigid and flexible boards?

As the names suggest, a rigid PCB is a circuit board built on a rigid base layer that cannot bend, while a flexible PCB, also called a flex circuit, is built on a flexible base capable of bending, twisting and folding.

Why are flex PCBs so expensive?

The number of layers is another significant cost driver of a flex PCB. As the number of circuit layers increases, the overall cost of the board increases. The lamination process becomes complicated as more layers are added to the board. This will take longer and will demand a greater supply of materials.
